Located at the Museum of Photographic Arts, 1649 El Prado, San Diego, CA, POP Thursdays offered a blending of photography and film with drinks and music into a party like no other.
The Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) created a dynamic film series in the heart of San Diego called POP Thursdays. POP Thursdays (POP standing for "Photography Off the Prado") included a variety of evening events that were designed for an audience of young, diverse, and urban professional and artistic individuals. Each event was hosted by MOPA, and featured music, beverages, films and interactive projects.
The first POP Thursdays event was inspired by MOPA's exhibition featuring Harry Callahan. It was called "The Photographer at Work," and MOPA complimented the exhibition with a screening of the film Dirty Harry. An impressive showing of over 300 attendees made this inaugural 2007 event a hit ever since.
POP Thursdays continued to grow in popularity over the years. Some of the most renown films shown at POP Thursdays included The Big Lebowski, Harold and Maude, and Bullitt. Guests could watch the film at the theater, as well as enjoy drinks from the cash bar while the film was projected on the atrium wall. In addition, guests were able to appreciate MOPA’s exhibitions on display all during the events.
POP Thursdays established itself as a signature event for the young and art savvy of San Diego. The events showcased an eclectic variety of MOPA's world-famous exhibitions of photography and film, coupled with the youthful and creative energy of San Diego's thriving arts scene. POP Thursdays could not have been made possible without its wonderful sponsors: Alchemy Restaurant, Big Hammer Wines, George’s Camera, Hand Carved Graphics, Kenneth Day Weddings, Stone Brewing Company and Svedka Vodka.
The Museum of Photographic Arts is a premier institution that is devoted to photography, film and video arts. MOPA was born in 1983, and since that time it has been committed to gathering and exhibiting the vast arts that make up the photographic medium. MOPA strives to address both cultural and social issues through its programs and exhibitions, and offers the community a wealth of progression, inspiration, and creativity.
Currently there are no screenings scheduled.
